Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering is one of the best departments of MawlanaBhashani Science and Technology University. The term Biotechnology means any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use and Genetic engineering is the technology entailing all processes of altering the genetic material of a cell to make it capable of performing the desired functions, such as producing novel substances. For the better use of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering for mankind and to meet the challenge of globalization MBSTU launched the academic activity of this Department from the year 2006.


Academic council of MBSTU in its 3rd meeting (held on 27.10.2004) recommended the proposal for opening our department which was then approved in 116th Regent Board meeting (held on 02.11.04). Finally University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) gave approval on 23.05.2005, which is our birthday. The academic activity of the department started from 2005-2006 session with only 04 teachers and 50 students. The department has also initiated the MS program from the academic session 2009-10. Currently, we have 14 faculty members with 6 of them pursuing their PhD degree and approximately 250 students.

Course Curriculum

At present the Department offers a 4-year Bachelor of Science and a 1.5-yearMS program in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.The curriculum of B. Sc. (Hons.) course in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering was designed keeping in mind the objective of the course and after thorough revision of leading national and foreign universities and consideration of the opinions of national pioneer and experts of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. The course consists of 160 credit hours of study and the whole curriculum was divided into eight different parts to cover in eight subsequent semesters. The MS syllabus is focused on the advanced and more recent topics of Biotechnology. The last 06 months of the 1.5 year program is dedicated for full time thesis work.

Resources and Lab Facilities of BGE Department

The department is still going through a phase of development. Measures for supporting the students with the best facilities are constantly being taken and hopefully with the transfer to the New Academic Building it will be able to maximize the amenities. At present, there are three class rooms, a seminar library and a laboratory. The laboratory is equipped with all the basic instruments to carry out biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology experiments. Among the notable equipment are PCR machine, Gel electrophoresis pack, Gel documentation system, ELISA, CO2 incubator, Autoclave machine, Centrifuge machine, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, Shaking incubator and Laminar air flow cabinet. The department is constantly trying to provide the students with a research environment and it is always involved in reviewing recent journals and organizing scientific seminars.
